City of El Monte
History
El Monte which referred not to the mountain as most assume, but to that ears definition “meadow or marsh” . The first permanent residents arrived in 1849-50 a time when many came to California seeking gold.
El Monte was a popular area for farmers and they were extremely successful. The community grew steadily with card parlors and dance halls, robberies and murders. Vigilantes particularly the infamous “Monte Boys,” hastened the hanging of wrongdoers. in 1873 when southern Pacific built the first railroad through town.
In 1876 the weekly newspaper strictly for El Monte and the opening of the drug store in 1892.

El Monte Union High School District was organized in 1901 which included students from portions of the present communities of Bassett, Whittier, Montebello, Rosemead, Temple City, Arcadia, Monrovia, and El Monte. The first year 12-15 students attended classes in a single room. In 1933 the Long Beach earthquake damaged the high school. The High School was later rebuilt and is still standing today as El Monte High School.
World War II brought dramatic change to El Monte which used to be prosperous for farming was now being used by factories for small aircraft parts. Population expanded rapidly from 1940-1950. High school enrollment grew from 1,500 students in 1943 to 3,700 in 1948. The first few years all students attended in one school, 1949 to present 4 others schools have been built.
